A collaboration show with Binder of Women
Binder of Women is an independent, artist-led platform conceptualised in Los Angeles in 2017 by Hilary Pecis and brought to the UK in 2022 by Pia Pack. Its mission is straightforward: to empower female artists, expand their reach, and grow the number of works by female-identifying artists in contemporary collections.
Between Us is built on a chain; gallery owner India Rose James and artist and founder Binder of Women (BOW) Pia Pack selected the first artists, who each then invited another, forming a train of twelve women whose practices now share a space and a set of newly acquired printmaking skills.
The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between BOW and Soho Revue Gallery and their in-house print studio Revue Studios. Working alongside print technician James Randell, the twelve artists; painters, sculptors, textile makers, have spent time in the print shop learning etching and lino processes, producing work outside their usual methods. The resulting twelve prints, each an edition of ten, are launched as four separate portfolios. They sit alongside a wider selection of unique works, giving a fuller picture of each practice while making the conversation between them visible. This conversation is also the subject of Between Us, a zine launched alongside the exhibition. Throughout eight pages, the first edition is focused on the discussions that emerged during the making of the works.
What holds all of it together is an ethos of genuine collaboration, highlighting both the individuality of each practice and the shared conversations that emerge when artists choose to champion and collaborate with one another. Therefore, the print portfolios are sold in groups of three, with profits split equally between the artists involved. It is a model that reflects the broader mission of Binder of Women: to champion artistic connection, mentorship and the generative power of women choosing to support one another.
The show does not flatten the artists into a collective. Individuality remains present throughout the range of media, in the distinct sensibilities on display. But it makes a convincing case that artistic identity need not be a solitary project. These are twelve practices made richer by proximity.
